This year spring fever kicked in a little early In Alta, Wyoming.  Even though I hadn’t finished my winter knitting projects, I was itching to get my fingers on something lighter and brighter. I designed this casual summer scarf using a stitch just perfect for highly variegated yarn. Thanks to carlynnfield.tumblr.com for the stitch pattern! I decided to balance the beautiful, hand-painted Koigu KPPPM colors with a denim shade of Koigu KPM for the body of the scarf. I finished just in time for our annual mother-daughter trip, this year to San Francisco. This scarf is perfect for a casual Northern California summer day. Hugs and kisses to my Meggie for being such a willing and beautiful model.

INSTRUCTIONS

Row 3 – K3, Purl to last 3 stitches, K3

Row 4 – K3, K1, *K3, pass 3rd stitch on righthand needle over first 2 stitches, YO, rep from* to last 2 stitches, K2, K3

Work this 4 row stitch pattern a total of 5 times.

Begin short rows (body of scarf)

Row 1 – K3, Purl 147, P2tog, P2, turn work

Row 2 – K8, K2tog, K2, turn work. Optional: I place a removable stitch marker on the first LH needle stitch just before I turn. This makes looking for the gap effortless.

Row 3 – Purl to 1 stitch before gap, P2tog, P2, turn work

Row 4 – Knit to 1 stitch before the gap, K2tog, K2, turn work

Continue with rows 3 and 4 until the last purl row has 4 stitches remaining on left-hand needle, P2tog, K3.

Next row, bind off all stitches knitwise. Optional: when you reach your 4 stitches remaining on left-hand needle, K2tog then bind off last 3 stitches.

Finishing
Weave in ends, block and enjoy your new summer scarf.

    1. Thank you 🙂 I will see if I can figure out how to make this pattern downloadable (maybe my kids can teach me!) in the meantime, try to copy and paste the pattern onto a document. Maybe it will be easier to work from that way.

    2. Hil I’ve been saving patterns to DropBox instead of downloading them for a while now. Try the DropBox App it’s much better in many cases. Hope this helps.

  1. Please help me find the Koigu yarn colors used in your beautiful scarf. I have been searching for the same numbers as you used and am coming up empty handed.

    1. Joyce and Molla – the KPPPM 620P was from my stash, the closest I can find is on Jimmybeanswool.com, either the 604, 611 or 612. As for the KPM, that color 1014, is available through jimmybeanswool.com. I love the solid blue denim because just like a pair of jeans, most colors go well with it. I think as you scroll through Jimmybeans selection of KPPPM, you’ll find lots of beautiful choices. Happy knitting 🙂
