Every family has a story. Mine is not a traditional tale, but it’s written with love.

My husband and I have been married for 6 years now. Not so very long, but long enough to come together with our children as one unit, a unit built on work, trust and love.

These same characteristics of work, trust and love are the foundation on which the Koigu Wool Designs company is built. Koigu is a family business located in Chatsworth a few hours outside of Toronto, Canada. Maie Landra and her mother Taiu started the small operation and named it after Maie’s husband’s ancestral home in Estonia.

Now, about 30 years after its initial inception, the Koigu yarn is still painted, hanked, labeled and shipped by the Landra women and a small handful of local employees.

Koigu is world famous for its high quality yarn, light and wearable, but most especially for the stunning, hand painted colorways. Check out their Facebook and Instagram accounts for more fabulous colors and projects.

Earlier this summer I designed a casual shawl, the San Francisco Summer Scarf using Koigo Premium Merino (KPM) in a lovely deep denim for the body and Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino (KPPPM) in a rainbow colorway for the edging.

My latest Koigu design is the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Fingerless Mitts worked in Koigu Kersti Merino Crepe. The colors of K505 are reminiscent of the beautiful Southern California coastline. Soft blues and greens with a hint of tans and browns. The yarn itself is a pleasure to knit and the results are consistently light, soft and squishy, perfect for a pair of cozy mitts.

I’m doing a promotional give-away from September 1st through September 15th. You can find the details here. The winner will receive 2 skeins in their choice of the 4 colorways pictured above, the perfect amount of yarn to knit up the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Fingerless Mitts!
